I Am A Bird Cover Reveal! Author Hope Lim Shares How The Story Came To Be
Blog & website of children's book author Tara Lazar I AM A BIRD Cover Reveal! Author Hope Lim Shares How the Story Came to Be by Hope Lim I AM A BIRD came together as I reflected on how two interactions I had on the same day evoked opposite emotions. I live in San Francisco and run most mornings in Golden Gate Park. I have passed the same woman a few times and noticed how she always looks straight ahead with a stone face and carries a big duffel bag. One morning, fear struck me as I saw her, but I was not certain why. I came home from running that day, thinking about how I would write about the stranger. Later that morning, my husband told me about how my daughter and her bird songs made people smile and wave on their way to school. They rode a tandem bike and my daughter would sit in the back and pretend to be a bird, caw-cawing all the way. His description of my daughter soaring high like a bird brought an immediate contrast to the unfounded fear that I was trying to transfer to paper. At that moment, my daughter jumped into my story as the main character. I have to thank my editor, Kate Fletcher, for her vision and guidance and to Hyewon Yum who brought the story to life with her rich illustrations and insightful interpretation of the story. I was especially moved by how Hyewon captured a childâs fear in such a creative and authentic way. The book releases February 2, 2021 from Candlewick, but the cover is here today! My hope is that I AM A BIRD encourages readers to soar above our differences and bias and celebrate what we have in common. Hope Lim is a childrenâs book author from South Korea and currently lives in San Francisco. Her debut book, I AM A BIRD, is to be released by Candlewick on February 2, 2021. Her debut will be followed by MY TREEI, Neal Porter Books/Holiday House in Summer 2021 and MOMMYâS HOMETOWN, Candlewick, in Fall 2022. Find more about Hope and her books at hopelim.com.

How to Network at Work (Carefully) - The Muse
Step by step instructions to Network at Work (Carefully) - The Muse Step by step instructions to Network at Work (Carefully) You've made the most of your activity. Also, you're truly darn acceptable at it. Yet, you're beginning to feel the tingle. It may not be an out and out consume (yet), however you're considering what it may resemble to go accomplish something different in another office, city, or totally unique association. What's more, you know individuals who may be remarkably useful. There's only one little issue: You work with them. They're a customer, or a colleague, or an organization your group works intimately with. Or then again, they're sitting only a table or office away and you have your eye on making an interior exchange. Fundamentally, the individuals best-prepared to assist you with investigating your next profession opportunity are somewhat (or, totally) the last individuals who can realize that you're contemplating rolling out an improvement. In the event that this is your test, dread not-you can at present gain ground without endangering your activity. You simply need to continue with care and a decent technique. Here are five hints that will help direct you in how to organize at work: 1. Volunteer for Special Projects Are there circumstances accessible at your organization to chip in for stretch assignments, extraordinary activities, or cross-useful boards of trustees? In the event that you have plans on moving to another gathering inside your present association, lift your hand for any of these assignments. By taking a shot at something with another arrangement of individuals, you'll not just get the opportunity to find out about different divisions and system with associates on those groups, you'll gain presentation well past your present extension that may help in cushioning your resume, should you choose to do the switch. Make certain to benefit from that introduction, as well. Ask your colleagues inquiries about what they're taking a shot at, the difficulties they face, the aptitudes they've manufactured, the individuals they've worked with, or the best pieces of their employments. You can surely show intrigue and increase some supportive information or associations without seeming dubious all things considered, you're simply making casual chitchat!- and these sorts of ventures give an extraordinary chance to do as such. 2. Take Their Breath away Perhaps you're staying there intuition, Well⦠my top client sure would be an extraordinary go-to person in case I'm considering moving into [field/company]. Before I go further, I'll state level out this is one of those minutes when you ought to continue with outrageous alert. You would prefer not to spoil a client relationship and your present work by violating your limits. In case you're feeling like a customer or partner could be an incredible individual to coordinate with, ensure you're reliably taking it out of the recreation center and exceeding expectations at the work you accomplish for them. Show that individual what a significant and fundamental resource you are, throughout each and every day. People who perceive how incredible you are at your specific employment will be substantially more slanted to recruit you or prescribe you to another person later on. Additionally, express enthusiasm for that individual's work, their objectives, and their life outside the workplace (simply don't get excessively close to home). Individuals love it when they feel esteemed and saw, and they'll frequently be more than ready to restore the generosity in the event that you've been a partner and somebody who has helped make their activity simpler. 3. Make it a Long Game In case you're not pants ablaze kicking the bucket to make a move, see this as a long-game versus a surge. Concentrate on building connections and trust with the individuals you think (or know) might be advantageous to your profession way. There's a lot of truth to the adage, It's not what you know, it's who you know. But the genuine advantage of systems administration goes past basically knowing somebody. It's likewise about how they feel about you and your abilities, your character, and your hard working attitude. In this way, state you're working at your organization's Chicago office and planning to move to the Seattle area inside the following year or thereabouts. Presently would be an ideal opportunity to become more acquainted with your partners in Seattle. Surely, you would prefer not to be pretentious about it (individuals can smell that a mile away), however on the off chance that your activity gives you conceivable motivation to speak with, show your abilities to, and prevail upon those partners, start the procedure a long time before your tingle turns into a fiery blaze. At the point when the opportunity arrives for you to apply for that move, you'll feel certain your associates are anxious to have you jump on board their group and will advocate readily for you. 4. Keep a Lid on Complaining Regardless of who you're attempting to associate with, oppose the impulse to say anything negative regarding your present place of employment. Nothing kills a key customer from working with you, yet additionally from being your profession direct like reviling your present organization regardless of whether it has nothing to do with them and everything to do with your particular job, group, or administrator. The equivalent goes for current associates, regardless of whether they're a few doors down or the nation over. Concentrate your energies on extending your system and aptitude and keeping up a positive expert picture. 5. Try not to Count on People to Keep the Secret This is a significant last idea: As close as you may feel to your partners and customers, you can't generally rely on them not to get the message out on the off chance that you uncover that you're somewhat kind of searching for something new. It isn't so much that they're deliberately attempting to demolish your arrangements it's simply that occasionally individuals truly like inclination aware of everything when in water cooler (or party time) discussions, and thus will in general let the cat out of the bag. In case you're not completely prepared for other people (a.k.a, your chief) to realize you're sniffing near, it's presumably best to keep your thoughts or goals on the down-low. Once more, do some situating. Pose inquisitive inquiries. Get introduction past your present division, office area, or organization. As featured above, you can do every one of these things without uncovering your actual thought processes organizing is eventually about something other than saying assist me with getting a new line of work. Simply don't depend on anybody however your besties to keep a top on it. There's nothing amiss with systems administration at work insofar as you're keeping on head of your assignments, being veritable, and proceeding to show dedication and regard for your present manager. Project vs. People Management
Venture versus Individuals Management Venture versus Individuals Management Overseeing ventures and overseeing/regulating require huge numbers of similar aptitudes and capacities; in any case, the employments are disparate in their power and specialized expertise. Both present intriguing and testing vocation ways for the individuals who have authority, correspondence, and hierarchical abilities. Abilities Required for Effective Management The two orders require solid initiative aptitudes. Task chiefs and administrators lead groups to accomplish shared objectives and, to be a pioneer, individuals need to follow. Work doesn't complete when colleagues dont fill their jobs, and everybody gets disappointed, and keeping in mind that people may confront disciplinary activity, pioneers are the ones whose employments are most in peril when targets are missed. A typical maxim about task chiefs is they invest 90% of their energy conveying. Minding the status of an errand that a part is focused on finishing, composing status reports, and holding gatherings are only a couple of the obligations supervisors have. Bosses additionally set desires with their staff, assemble data, and report on the cooperation Hierarchical abilities are significant for venture chiefs and bosses. Undertaking administrators will in general be organizers naturally who flourish with building up an arrangement and executing it. They even include plans inside plans like a correspondence plan inside a task's work breakdown structure. Directors need to monitor what their staff individuals are doing. Chiefs guarantee everybody is taking a shot at the correct things at the opportune time. They corral crafted by singular supporters of help their endeavors be generally valuable to their utilizing business, charitable or government office. Utilizing Appropriate Leverage to Complete Tasks Authority - Project chiefs don't hold the board authority over their venture colleagues while managers can enlist, fire, train and constrain their staff to follow orders. Without the danger of faculty activity in their back pockets, This dynamic requires venture pioneers to have brilliant administration abilities. In all actuality, administrators ought to once in a while undermine work force activity, yet they have the capacity, and commonly, that is a sufficient danger. While venture chiefs can't fire their task colleagues for terrible showing, they have methods of considering colleagues responsible. Toward the front of a venture, an undertaking administrator works with bosses to pick up duty from them on how much time and exertion will be anticipated from their staff who will take an interest in the task. At the point when venture directors and chiefs are on the same wavelength in this regard, it is simpler for venture supervisors to plot how a task colleague isn't contributing properly. A venture director's first intuition isn't to go to a colleague's manager when an issue happens. Venture directors set up components for colleagues to consider each other responsible. Ordinary status gatherings where colleagues focus on executing undertakings inside indicated time periods help the colleagues consider each other responsible. A venture director wouldn't like to be the just one getting out individuals on missed cutoff times and helpless deliverable quality. At the point when all else falls flat, an undertaking administrator finds support from a task support. This individual has the hierarchical clout to do things neither a task chief nor a common boss can do. An undertaking supporter can go over an administrator to have a task colleague expelled or trained to better execution. Aptitude - Something that makes venture administrators approach their work uniquely in contrast to chiefs is that a task director isn't really a specialist in an undertaking's topic while bosses are specialists in staff business. A venture director is a specialist in venture the board forms who unites contrastingly qualified specialists to accomplish an undertaking's objectives. The venture group takes care of an undertaking's issues and issues. The venture administrator gives structure to the group to do as such. A chief is increasingly participatory in conceiving business arrangements since the individual regularly has a comparable level of mastery on the issue as their staff.

Since I no longer compensation intrigue, the credits cards are presently paying me (with those focuses). They have a term for clients like me and its incidentally, a killjoy since I dont make them any cash. It feels astounding to be a deadbeat!2. Not putting resources into land sooner .My greatest monetary lament isn't putting resources into land sooner, says Jacqueline, the originator of individual account site, Mom Money Map. We purchased our home in 2014. Its since increased in value by more than 50 percent in esteem. We had the option to take out the acknowledged esteem and put it in an investment property, which is presently producing customary income. In the event that we had purchased our home even only a couple of years sooner, our home would have increased in value by more than 100 percent in esteem in light of the fact that the market went up so fast.3. Neglecting to investigate advanced education programs. One of my greatest budgetary slip-ups was really a blend of missteps that cost me over $65,000, says Katelyn of Debt and Cupcakes. To start, I chose to go to an out-of-state college to get my degree in Nursing (BSN). The choice to go to an out-of-state school was very costly and most of the expense was secured by understudy advances. This choice const rained me to move on from school with more than $65,000 in understudy advance debt.At the time, she says she was totally unconscious that a neighborhood medical clinic offered a two-year recognition program that would permit her to acquire precisely the same nursing permit, and would have cost exponentially less. The thing about a nursing degree is that all RNs take a similar national affirmation test, get precisely the same permit, and work in a similar limit paying little mind to their four-or two-year degree, she clarifies. My BSN didnt offer me an expanded beginning compensation, and my BSN didnt give me any extra open doors out of the entryway. To exacerbate the situation, when I acquired my first occupation, I understood that most clinics and medicinal services associations will pay for 100 percent of proceeding with training costs. Had I known this, I would have spared a huge number of dollars and long stretches of understudy advance payments.4. Not seeking after certifiable e ncounters faster.I have such a large number of money related second thoughts, yet my greatest is getting an advanced degree as opposed to understanding that working for nothing for that numerous years would have gotten me to where I am today quicker, says Anne Jordan. It would have been less expensive to fill in as an unpaid assistant for two or three years and get work understanding with the goal that I could climb. Instruction scarcely opened entryways for me, and has placed me under water until I die.5. Flippantly spending an excessive amount of money. My greatest budgetary second thoughts are that I spent an excess of cash on celebrating and didnt spare, says Erica Knight. I at that point paid for my own wedding, followed two years after the fact by paying for my own separation. Subsequently, I have obligations as opposed to investment funds and dont own my own house.6. Not investing.Over 10 years after the fact, I despite everything kick myself for not suitably putting away my l ingering check cash from school, says Tenesha L. Curtis, CEO at Volo Press. The almost $10,000 (through the span of four years) I got as a little something extra when my grants, awards and advances overshot my educational cost needs implied that I could have placed that cash into renting a bit of business land, putting an initial installment on an investment property, or publicizing my composing administrations so as to begin producing a salary from new customers. Rather, I went on trips and bought different trivial things like new mobile phones and extravagant computers.Curtis prescribes continually utilizing godsends of money to either spare in a high-premium record or put resources into a lucrative open door that can ensure an arrival, for example, land.- - AnnaMarie Houlis is a women's activist, an independent writer and an experience fan with a partiality for indiscreet performance travel. How to improve your focus - Debut
The most effective method to improve your center - Debut Ahh, losing focus. In case you're enduring with it, it tends to be difficult to refocus. I wager you're in any event, battling to remain concentrated on this article at the present time, right? In any case, remain with me, as I probably am aware the inclination. What's more, talking as a matter of fact both from slaving ceaselessly over my exposition to writing this article inside my working environment I've figured out how to discover straightforward arrangements that help hone the psyche to complete that additional errand. Furthermore, to make it that tad increasingly fun, I've part these techniques into inspiring your five detects. Let me assist you with getting engaged! Tune in to the proper sounds What you can hear around you can massively affect your capacity to focus. It's the reason quiet examination territories were imagined, all things considered! A few people can work in a bustling café with rushing about, while others should be bolted away from every other sound. For me actually, I've seen my headphones as my new closest companion. At the point when I'm taking a shot at a direct assignment, web recordings are my redeeming quality. I can make up for lost time with my preferred shows while marking off that plan for the day that I would somehow or another stall on by making a million cups of tea. In the event that my undertaking requires more intellectual competence or innovativeness, at that point I suggest study music. I'm actually a major supporter of the 24 hour YouTube playlists of LoFi Hip-jump/study beats. As per real researchers, the recurrence inside this kind of music improves focus levels and permits your cerebrum to process data much better. I'm in any event, tuning in to it as I'm composing this⦠INCEPTION. Rest your eyes when you have to At the point when we work, a large portion of our sight will be prepared on a screen. Regardless of whether it's on a work area for composing your exposition or your versatile on the Debut application (nervy brassy). In any case, the thing is, your eyes can unfortunately take a limited amount of much stressing on that fluorescent blue light. On the off chance that your sight is getting somewhat unstable and a migraine is setting in, at that point perhaps it's an ideal opportunity to offer your eyes a reprieve. Go for a stroll, snatch an espresso and for the love of all that is pure and holy gander at something that ISN'T your telephone. Unplug from the advanced world for a tad. On the off chance that that implies having a short kip to be increasingly alert (particularly in the event that you're an evening person) at that point feel free to do it! Your eyes can reveal to you a million things about your body, so make certain to hear them out. Additionally, in case you're recommended glasses, wear them. Truly. Dress to center, not to unwind What you wear can truly influence your vitality levels. While we as a whole fantasy about telecommuting in our PJ's, it's not generally the most gainful activity, as it can cause us to feel tired and by and large not in a decent mental-state for work. Truly consider what places you in the correct headspace. Prepare as though it were an ordinary day; shower, dress as needs be and experience your typical daily practice. It doesn't make a difference in case you're not going out; the manner in which you dress can really significantly affect your bearing of core interest. Likewise, in the event that you're heading off to the library or office, at that point you most likely shouldn't be in your night robe at any rate. Not incredible social decorum, old buddy. Get a nose for your condition Okay, perhaps Im extending it on the smell sense, yet the importance is no less effective. Similarly as getting dressed can impact the manner in which you work, so can what encompasses you. Everybody works in an unexpected way, so try out a couple of techniques to perceive what truly gets your mind ticking. Sitting in a straight back seat at a work area might be more beneficial than resting on your bed, for instance. You may work better in a live with regular light, or even some place that is close to greenery. At our old office, I used to work truly well in these little disconnection corners. When I got in one of them, my fingers would fly over the console. So do a few recces to various regions of the library, office, home or even open spaces to perceive what suits you. On the off chance that you need to take the smell sense truly, at that point you can really get room diffusers/candles in fragrances that are intended to have a passionate quality. On the off chance that you're a major devotee of fragrance based treatment, at that point stick one of these in your home working space and see what occurs! Keep your craving satisfied The last sense taste is a major one. It might appear glaringly evident to state ensure you eat, however you wouldn't accept how basic it is for understudies to swear off lunch for an additional hour of examining. Try not to leave this alone you. Appetite can divert your significantly from working, I should know. Difficult interview questions and answers
Difficult interview questions and answers by Michael Cheary How many recruiters does it take to change a lightbulb?Hiring managers occasionally like to test a candidateâs problem-solving skills and encourage them to demonstrate examples of logical thinking. Weâve covered how to answer common interview questions, but what happens when youâre asked something more unconventional? Here are a few of our favourite unconventional interview questions, and how to answer themHow many basketballs can you fit onto a bus? Some of our favourite answersDepends on if the basketballs are inflated or not!!Vicki WicksSingle or double decker?Kerry FlemingActual answerAs with a lot of these questions, there isnât a definitive answer. Itâs really all about demonstrating a logical way of working them out. A great example of how to answer is: Avaas Beenie: Calculate length, width, height = cubic metres. Account for seats etc. then assume the size of an inflated ball is 0.2 cubic metres. You divide the cubic metres of bus space by th e ball space and any space for seats, bars etcHow many traffic lights are there in London? Some of our favourite answersSets of lights or individual lights?@nrogers959The whole of London has about 3,500 traffic lights. There are about 300 junctions , which bear these traffic lights.@hyderymrActual answerA lot. We think @hyderymr is probably along the right lines. Essentially, itâs all about estimation and demonstrating logic in reaching the conclusion. Ok, you get the pictureHow many piano tuners are there in the entire world? Some of our favourite answersNot enough, I dare sayRosario Scalzoenough to make beautiful musicJanet BakerActual answerBasically go with a well thought out estimate, e.g. âThat would depend how many pianos there are in the entire world. For example, if pianos need tuning once a week, and it takes an hour to tune a piano and a piano tuner works nine hours a day for five days a week, then pianos need tuning each week. It would be one for every 45 pianos. Give or takeâ If you can demonstrate how adept you are at logical thinking Ok, you get the picture.A man pulls up to a hotel in a silver car, and immediately realizes hes bankrupt. What happened? Some of our favourite answersHe landed on a boardwalkJoanne ArmourHe was playing Monopoly.Ste HampsonActual answerHe was playing Monopoly. Letâs face it, everyone loves a riddle. Remember: some questions may be thrown in to catch you out. Try not to overthink the question. Taking a deep breath may help (and give you a handy time to pause for thought)Explain a database in three sentences to your eight year old nephew? Some of our favourite answersIts like whats in your head, in a machine. Got that? Good!@DennisCattellYou have short answers to lots of different questions. Those answers are put on a computer. You look at other peoples answers and see how they are different to your answers. WAKE UP, NEPHEW!Michael GibsonActual answerSometimes candidates rely too heavily on overcomplicated answers and technical jargon. This question relies on your ability to simplify things and being able to describe them in a succinct and concise way.Something along the lines of: âA database is a lot of things, which have all been put together in a group. They have lots of information in them, and are kept on a computer. A very nice person sorts them all outâ will be sufficient.Failing that go with: âGrown. Up. Stuff.âIf you could be any type of biscuit, what type of biscuit would you be, and why? Some of our favourite answersChocolate digestive because it goes with tea coffee wellAlex TeeA chocolate digestive- like a classic digestive, only better, able to withstand a dunking, and can be put to a variety of uses AND Id be universally lovedRuth ChapmanActual answerCustard Cream. Always Custard Cream.Whatever the question may be, most unconventional interviews donât really have set right or wrong answers. They are meant to demonstrate how a candidate would react if a difficult prob lem came up, not to mention how they would cope under pressure.Deceptively, they arenât intended to take too much time. Instead of trying to come up with the perfect answer, just be creative and come to your own conclusion. As long as you can demonstrate how you got there, youâve passed the test. Finally, how many recruiters does it take to change a lightbulb? Answer: too manyMore interview questionsOf course, there are many different types of interview questions and not all of them are intended to throw you a curveball. So whether youre looking on advice how to answer questions about your career goals, competency questions or character questions weve got you covered. And if youâre stuck for what to ask at the end of the interview, view our suggested job interview questions now.Still searching for your perfect position? 10 Candidate Questions Thatll Make You Squirm (But Earn)
10 Candidate Questions Thatll Make You Squirm (But Earn) Theres nothing worse than working closely with a candidate and genuinely believing that youve found them the PERFECT role, only to confidently deliver them the offer and have a curveball hit you out of nowhere! They tell you that theyve decided to stay at their current company, or that something else has popped up down the road, meaning they can be home by 6pm to see their children for an extra hour (children, they didnt mention any children to you)? These nail-biting questions will ensure that you leave no stone unturned and will help to eliminate those nasty last minute surprises! 1. Why do you want to leave? Its important that at this stage you assure the candidate its a completely confidential conversation. What you dont want to do is put them forward for a role which could result in the candidate encountering the same frustrations and dropping out prematurely (it doesnt look good for you or the candidate). Asking them this question outright will also give you a good talking point, allowing you to delve deeper into what theyd like to see from a new position. This also opens up a great opportunity to sell your role to them! 2. Take this role to one side, what would your perfect role look like? The best way of asking this is to explain that you have a number of roles open constantly, and that you want to work out whether there is anything else worth putting them forward for. Okay sure, this can be difficult to digest as they rattle off a list of industries and responsibilities that theyd love to get involved in especially when that list starts to look like the polar opposite of the job description you recently sent through to them. The best tip? Be honest and push back on them. Ask, why this role? They might surprise you when they describe to you one aspect which really interests them. If it really doesnt look like a match made in heaven, at least you save yourself the heartache in the long run from a rejected offer, and instead form a list of target companies to proactively target on their behalf, based on what they are looking for. 3. Have you spoken to your boss about the fact that youre unhappy? Find this question difficult to ask? Dont! Sure, some candidates are nervous about approaching their boss and tackling their frustrations head on, without the safety-net of a new job-offer lined up, but its good to have honest conversations to make sure everyone is on the same page. Explain the benefit to them of having this conversation up front. Why? As soon as they hand in their notice, the likelihood is that this conversation will take place and the candidate will receive a counter offer. If your candidates issue with their current role is something that is easily fixed by their boss, you could end up in a sticky situation! Its best for everyone to find this out earlier on in the process! 4. Have you looked for other opportunities internally? Maybe the candidate is frustrated with the responsibilities of their current job role, but theyre fully immersed in the company, its values and culture (especially if theyve been with the company for a long time). If theyre applying internally, find out what stage they are at (many companies will prioritise internal applications over external ones) and talk to them about the pros and cons of staying with the same organisation. Make sure the offer you get them isnt going to just be a bargaining chip for them to get a pay-rise internally! 5. Are you in the process of applying elsewhere? Aside from the candidates application/s with you, what else do they have going on? Most active candidates in the marketplace will have more than one iron in the fire (and thats fine, you want them to make a well informed decision!) However, there are a couple of additional questions that you can ask that will really help you gauge how serious this candidate is about their application 6. (If they are) Which role is currently your preference and why? This is where honesty from the candidate is really important. If your role is priority number 10, is it worth your time and effort representing them? 7. How many other applications do you have? Ive personally been faced with that horrible feeling in the pit in your stomach when a candidate tells you that they have 8 or 9 other interviews within the next week. Why so many? Sometimes the most in-demand candidates can be the most difficult to work with. Getting a heads up on this is important, so you know youre probably going to have to exert extra control over the process. 8. Who else in your life will influence your decision? Partners, family members and significant others all play a huge role in peoples decisions when they are considering making a big change in their life. Hopefully, they will have spoken to their partner / family members about this role or at least about the fact that they would like to move. If they havent, this would be an alarm bell for me! (Ask them if theres any reason they havent, and whether they are serious about moving on form their current role). 9. Have you been turned down by another company recently? Why? I once had a candidate tell me that he got very nervous in a presentation, became flustered in the interview and referred to it as a car crash situation (he was actually attending a presentation-based interview for me the following week) and it had clearly knocked his confidence. To conquer this I set up a meeting with him before the interview and had him present back to me first. We talked through the presentation and I threw tricky questions at him, but also assured him that it was a really good presentation! So, when it came to the day, it seemed like a breeze in comparison to his last interview. If I hadnt asked, I wouldnt have known 10. Do you have any reservations in accepting this role if offered? **Close eyes and bite lip on the other end of the phone as you ask this question** Its such a powerful question to ask. Hopefully they will say no, but even if they say yes, these are things that you can still overcome before their mind is made up. Maybe they really like the role but it doesnt offer flexi-working (easily solved one phone call to the hiring manager to ask whether this is an option / how they could accommodate) and relaying this to the candidate. The most important thing to consider when representing candidates, is that you need to gather as much information as possible and make sure youve done everything you can to accommodate their need and reservations BEFORE delivering any offer of employment to a candidate. The last thing you want to be faced with is a candidate turning down the offer based on something that could have been avoided if tackled earlier in the process. Effective questioning and ensuring that the candidate is able to be honest with you are key components to understanding your candidates needs. From here it will be easier to manage the process between your candidate and client and and ultimately understand whether this is the right role for them!

Know Your Network 3 Personal Brand Musts To Share - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Know Your Network 3 Personal Brand Musts To Share - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career From the time we enter college as an undergraduate to the time we retire, weâre taught the importance of building a solid professional network. We send friendly emails to the names printed on business cards we collect at area networking events, and we issue expertise and job updates to former and current co-workers and bosses on LinkedIn. But building and updating your network on professional progress is useless if they donât âknowâ you. To clarify, I donât mean know your motherâs maiden name âknowâ you. I mean they know that one unique thing about your personal brand that sets you apart from their other connections. Sure, everyone youâre connected to probably knows your current position and where youâre located. But if your connection learns of a stellar opportunity within his company or finds a great position online, does he know to pass it your way? âJob seekers are primarily looking for positions for themselves and often donât stop to really consider how their connections, other job seekers and professionals, might be able to help,â explains Sudy Bharadwaj, co-founder and CEO of Jackalope Jobs. âHowever, when your network knows youâre looking, they often tend to recognize that job that is perfect for someone they know.â So how can you make sure your network âknowsâ your personal brand and can identify the jobs that might be a fit for you? Bharadwaj outlined three personal brand âmustsâ professionals need to share with their network connections in order to pop into mind when a new opportunity appears. 1. Choose One Position You Want Them To Remember Professionals, especially young professionals, vacate positions often for a variety of reasons. Perhaps theyâve gotten a promotion within a company, relocated to a new city or even started a new company. Such frequent changes can leave your connections second-guessing as to where youâve worked and what you do. To keep confusion of your personal brand at a minimum, choose one position youâve held or currently hold that you always want your connections to remember. Perhaps you want them to remember a job with a high-ranking title or a job where you were given an exorbitant amount of responsibility. You want your connection to see a job with a vice president title or multi-tasking requirement and think, âHey, thatâs so-and-so!â 2. Choose One Skill You Want Them To Remember Say, for example, youâre a public relations professional. Chances are you have superb writing and editing skills. Chances are so does everybody else in your profession. You want to find one skill you possess that separates you from mostly everybody else in your profession. To continue the public relations example, do you know how to shoot and edit video? Or are you at ease answering public inquiries on camera? Not everybody in your profession has these skills. Choose one unique skill and make sure to build your brand around it. 3. Choose One Personality Trait You Want Them To Remember Skills and past work experience are only part of what it takes to ultimately land you a job; personality plays a large role as well. Companies, like people, have unique internal traits that distinguish them from their competition. Think of one personality trait you want your network to remember about you. Is it that youâre obsessed with your dog? Or are you a crossfit nut? The next time your connection finds a job at Marcus Thomas, LLC or hears his boss talking about how accomplished he feels for completing 100 burpees at his workout this morning, heâll think of you. Remember to choose a position, skill and personality trait that best fit with the personal brand youâve already spent time building. If youâve constructed your brand correctly, choosing these three musts will be simple and obvious. Which three âmustsâ do you want your network to remember? How do they work with your personal brand? How to Make Your Company Friendlier to Working Mothers (and Why You Should)
How to Make Your Company Friendlier to Working Mothers (and Why You Should) Even if you donât know it, thereâs a good chance you have a mother working for your businessâ"or you will in the future. According to the National Womenâs Law Center, nearly 70% of women with children younger than 18 are in the workforce; nearly 60% of women with infants are, too. Not only is that a lot of working mothers, but thatâs simply a lot of workers in general. And with unemployment so low, from a simply economic standpoint, you canât afford to not be competitive to these candidates. Many of them are in their mid-to-late 30s, bringing significant experience, too. In order to make your company a desirable place for working mothers, youâll likely have to make some changes to your company culture. These are more than just a few fringe benefits; theyâre thoughtful changes with working mothers in mind. But theyâre worth itâ"both for the health of your company, and your bottom line. 1. Get comfortable with flexibility. Motherhood is unpredictableâ"thatâs simply the nature of the job (yes, itâs a job). Being a mother requires flexibility, so it follows that employers who want to be friendlier to mothers need to be flexible, too. That can be difficult for companies who are used to very structured work days, attendance policies, or in-office cultures. But, in order to attract and retain top talent, and compete with employers offering the benefit of flexibility, youâll have to get comfortable with the idea, too. Often, the primary way that flexibility manifests, and that mothers request it, is with scheduling. As mothers re-enter the workforce after giving birth, consider a program that allows them to work from home part-time and readjust to office life gradually. In general, offering a more lenient remote work policy will allow mother breathe a sigh of relief on days their childcare flakes, or school has a snow day. Remember that the cost of childcare is prohibitively expensiveâ"one of the top reasons why mothers donât return to work after childbirth. 2. Create a private space. Although the Fair Labor Standards Act does mandate that all small businesses must provide nursing mothers a private lactation space for their first year of nursing, this doesnât always happenâ"and even then, whatâs provided isnât always enough. By law, the space must be something more than the bathroom, but some employers provide little more than a closet. The space you provide for mothers is a signal to how you value themâ"their comfort, their lifestyle, and the difficulty of balancing home life and work life. Setting up a comfortable space where working mothers donât feel harriedâ"and even feel that they can get away for a momentâ"can make a major difference, especially during a time in which theyâre sleeping less and stressing out more. 3. Offer an education savings plan. Many employers have made strides with regards to creating better retirement plans and matching contributions. But parents are thinking bigger than themselves. Offering the option for an education savings plan, like a 529 matching plan for college, can be a substantial draw for working mothers. In a similar vein to 401ks and IRAs, 529 savings accounts are tax-advantaged plans geared specifically for paying for education. Offering the option at your company can send a message that you are a family-friendly workplace. Itâs the kind of perk you might even want to advertise in your job listings. 4. Consider reassessing your PTO policies. Itâs a big culture shift to go from a finite number of vacation days to an unlimited vacation policy. But for working mothers, employers who arenât parsimonious with their paid time off are highly desirable. There are a few key reasons for this. Among them, mothers need to plan their vacations around school holidays and vacations. Itâs expensive to go away when everyone is planning vacations around the same times, and if they need to be counting their days, they canât book in advance. Allowing them the leeway to know that theyâll be able to go when they have the small window to go is one fewer thing to worry aboutâ"as well as money saved. Next goes back to flexibility. Say her child needs to go to the doctor one weekday. The last thing she wants to worry about is having to use one of her vacation days if sheâs all out of sick or personal time. This kind of responsible leeway can make a world of difference. 5. Offer a shared assistant/amenities. If you donât have the ability for your workers to get work done off premises, or want to go above and beyond, consider actually offering onsite services. This could mean childcare at work so mothers donât have to time pickup, or fitness classes so they donât have to worry about squeezing in time for a workout. You can even help alleviate stress by creating a shared concierge to run errands that canât get done. For example, things like picking up dry cleaning, receiving packages, or grabbing ingredients for dinner. *** Most importantly, one immediate change you can make is a simple change of mindset. Not every family unit is the same: Donât assume she has a support network at home to help her out with basic tasks, or even an extended family or group of friends around to support her. In fact, make the baseline assumption that sheâs raising her child or children on her own. Twenty-five percent of mothers are actually raising children on their own. When a working mother makes a request, thereâs likely a good reason for it. So be sensitive, and understand that when one job ends, thereâs always another to go home to.
